We anticipate that this program will begin Summer 2022.  Currently, we will need only 5 delivery drivers to start, please considering joining the waitlist because we anticipate a need for more in the future.  Please read the entire description before applying, thanks.  

BOOKS ON WHEELS DELIVERY VOLUNTEERS 

Location: Mooresville Public Library/Various Locations Around Mooresville 

Duration: Continuous for a year  

Hours/DaysMinimum of once a month; two to three hours at a time.  Volunteers can choose to do multiple days of the month and other times if they choose 

Summary 

 

Homebound Delivery Volunteers will assist in delivery of library materials to patrons that are in assisted living facilities, nursing homes, and residences in our service area.  Volunteers will be assigned to designated homebound patrons in order to form a collaboration between volunteers and patrons that is consistent.  

Volunteers must be comfortable using their own vehicle that has valid insurance to complete this volunteer activity.  Volunteer will sign a waiver form above and beyond the standard form that is mandatory for this position since driving is involved, as well as have a mandatory background check.  A volunteer commitment for at least a year is needed to be considered for this volunteer position. 

 

Responsibilities  

 

  1. Check the schedule on the day of delivery and determine the best route for delivery. 
  2. Confirm with other staff/volunteer plans for pick up and check with library staff to determine if a homebound patron has missing books or another library related issue prior to delivery. 
  3. Refer homebound patrons who request help with library services and finding materials to library staff or volunteer liaison.  Staff will help patrons with services and locate materials within the library.  Takes adequate notes about patrons needs to relay to library staff.   
  4. Ensure that homebound patrons receive their materials in a timely manner and assist patrons with the return delivery of their materials and form positive relationships with homebound patrons. 
  5. Communicate regularly with the library’s Volunteer Coordinator, volunteer liaison, and staff regarding questions, volunteer schedule, suggestions, and to request supplies. 
  6. When you must cancel a scheduled Homebound Delivery shift, notify the library’s Volunteer Coordinator as soon as possible. 
  7. Abide by the Mooresville Public Library’s confidentiality policy and support for intellectual freedom. 
  8. Other duties as assigned by library staff. 

 

Qualifications & Skills  

 

Homebound Delivery Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and hold a valid driver’s license with access to an insured vehicle.  Volunteer applicants will be asked to interview with the Volunteer Coordinator and authorize a criminal background check.  Eligible Homebound Delivery Volunteers will be required to sign waiver forms prior to volunteering for the program.  Desired qualifications and skills include: 

  • Being respectful of diverse lifestyles, cultures, religions, and values. 
  • Having a working knowledge of basic library functions and services. 
  • Showing patience and respect for those that are in a homebound situation. 
  • Be respectful of boundaries created by library staff and patrons for delivery.
  • Being punctual on scheduled days and maintaining positive relationships with homebound patrons, other volunteers, and library staff. 
  • Ability to work as part of a team with other Library staff and volunteers. 
  • Following all directions given by Library staff. 

 

Physical Requirements 

  

Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, standing, walking, reaching, grasping, using fingers, talking, lifting, bending, pushing, pulling, hearing, and repetitive motions. Must be able to perform light work exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally; up to 10 pounds of force frequently; and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.  Must be able to drive an insured vehicle with a valid driver’s license that is free and clear of violations as determined by the appropriate authorities. 

 

Application & Orientation Process 

 

The Library Volunteer Coordinator will read applications, interview individuals who meet the Homebound Delivery qualifications and then a criminal background check will be conducted.  Just because you apply for this opportunity is not a guarantee for the position since other steps need to occur prior to starting.  New volunteers will be required to attend a Homebound Delivery volunteer orientation and will be given a welcome meeting and tour of the library.
