Who We Are
One of the leading sources of water pollution in local waters is stormwater runoff. Stormwater runoff occurs when rainfall carries oil, grease, chemicals, and debris from impermeable surfaces into our waterways. To combat these sources of pollution, the EPA implemented the NPDES Phase II Stormwater Program. This program issues permits to smaller municipalities, requiring them to implement programs and practices to control polluted stormwater runoff.
In 2011, the Town of Mooresville was issued a Phase II NPDES Permit. Since that time, the Town has implemented a Stormwater Program and now has a growing department. Stormwater is housed under Engineering Services at the Public Operation Center.
What We Do
The primary goal of the stormwater program is to protect and preserve our local waterways from the impacts of stormwater pollution. The stormwater staff achieves this by carrying out the following tasks:
- Maintaining and repairing stormwater infrastructure such as catch basins, ditches, pipes and outlets
- Responding to citizen calls and emails about applicable drainage and flooding concerns
- Educating residents and businesses of the impacts of stormwater pollution and how they can get involved
- Interpreting and enforcing Town ordinances in place to protect our surface waters
